Iran attacked a US carrier mockery during exercise

Iranian state television has shown footage of military exercises near the Strait of Hormones, which handles a fifth of the world’s oil transport. High-speed Iranian ships, helicopters, and ground forces were seen firing at the carrier’s melee, including missiles.

New long-range missiles were also used during the exercise, a spokesman for the Revolutionary Guard said. They are capable of “attacking flying targets from a distance,” said Iranian General Abbas Nilforoshan.

Rebecca Rebarich, spokeswoman for the United States Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, criticized the attack on a model depicting a United States Nimitz-class ship. US forces are said to carry out only defensive exercises, but Iran’s maneuvers were “offensive” and intended to “intimidate.” The movement of merchant ships in the Strait of Hormones was not interrupted by the Iranian exercise.

Under Donald Trump’s presidency, relations between the United States and Iran have collapsed. Trump continues to call Iran a major source of violence and instability in the Middle East and applies a “maximum pressure” policy on the country. Earlier this year, both sides were on the brink of war when Iranian General Qassem Soleiman was assassinated during a US attack on Iraq.
