May 9 in Lithuania: not only with red carnations: from images of Putin to genitalia on the roof

On Saturday, May 9, there were also saints in Lithuania. In the morning, people were drawn in small groups to the Antakalnis cemetery in Vilnius, where victims of World War II are buried.

War veterans and their followers traditionally gather at the Antakalnis cemetery every year, but this morning there were no veterans dressed in orders, no speeches were heard, and fewer people came. However, there was no lack of those who walked with carnations and stripes called Georgy or “red beetle”.

Some of those who came decorated with images of the Russian flag, Putin or even Kalashnikov. Access to the cemetery was guarded by large police forces. And here, elsewhere in Vilnius, the mention of May 9 is very different.

On the roof of the so-called Moscow houses, strangers painted the annual figures and huge male genitalia with white paint. However, the building is not open to the public, so according to police representative Ramūnas Matonis, officials are interested in the circumstances of the incident.

Lithuania commemorates the anniversary of World War II with the western world: it is May 8 and Lithuania is boycotting the events of May 9. After all, Russia’s victory in Eastern Europe, which started after the victory, was marked by long years of occupation and deportations to Siberia.
