Italy wants to extend the state of emergency

On January 31, Mr. Conte declared a state of emergency for six months when a Chinese couple was diagnosed with a coronavirus in Rome. If not extended, the state of emergency will expire on Friday. However, the emergency is based on a series of ordinances that the government has taken to protect human health and that are still in force.

“If we lift the state of emergency, the protection and prevention system that we have established this month will fail. We made difficult decisions that required sacrifices from the Italians. However, it allowed us to overcome the most difficult stage of the coronavirus emergency,” said G Contė.

The pandemic has claimed 35,000 lives in Italy. However, the number of new infections after a long and strict quarantine is now low.

Conté also spoke in parliament in favor of opening schools in September. “10 million children should be able to return to school in complete safety. A lot of effort is needed. This is a great challenge for the country,” said the prime minister. In Italy, schools have been closed since March 5.
