And preparing for the operation took time for other reasons. The boy’s father accuses the doctors of negligence and is considering claiming damages.
The patient’s father, Marius Ablačinks, told LNK reporters what the doctors had told him: without a coronavirus test, the boy would not be able to undergo surgery.
“They sent us across the street to do a coronavirus test. Specialists came and took a sample of COVID-19, it was around 23 hours,” said the boy’s father.
They told him that he would not have to wait long to receive a response from the investigation.
“The GP said it was an hour, maybe two hours. And they really stressed the outgoing nurses who were carrying the sample that extra case. The surgeon already told me that it would take about two hours after all to wait for the result. And that means about three hours after we lost 6 hours, I asked that surgeon humanely, this is how it happens here.
And he answered me so humanely, that it happens that the result has to wait 13 hours. It all depends on how the sample container is filled in the laboratory, ”he said.
The boy underwent surgery at 10 o’clock in the morning, the disease was already advanced: the appendicitis was gangrenous and the fluid accumulated in the pelvic area. Therefore, the child must spend at least 5 days in resuscitation.
Arūnas Strumila, the head of the pediatric surgery department at Children’s Hospital, explains to the boy’s father that his son had an operation later, not because he had to wait for the COVID-19 test.
“That response to the coronavirus test does not affect the urgency of the operation. If necessary, we will definitely operate if we see that the condition is severe,” said the surgeon.
According to him, the boy was taken to the hospital a day and a half after the onset of appendicitis. And just because it’s sharp doesn’t mean the patient needs surgery right away.
“It allows us to wait, to prepare the child for the safest operation, to be as calm as possible. “Those 6 hours, which we don’t always wait, are 2 to 6 hours, while we wait for the coronavirus test response, we are ready for surgery at that time,” explained A. Strumila.
However, when a patient’s life or health is at risk, doctors operate without waiting for a coronavirus test response. If there is no response to the test, a separate medical team operates, everything is carried out in a separate operating room.
Still, the boy’s father believes his son would feel better today if he had surgery right away. Therefore, consider seeking medical compensation.
The Ministry of Health (SAM) explains that patient assistance must be provided urgently if necessary. It is not the specific disease that should be evaluated, but the condition of the patient.
SAM Chancellor Odeta Vitkūnienė said how doctors should behave.
“In accordance with all diagnostic and treatment algorithms, all patients admitted to a personal health care facility for essential emergency medical care must examine, treat, operate, and adopt other life-saving medical tactics and the patient’s health. ” – said O. Vitkūnien dijo.
The COVID-19 test is performed when the patient experiences symptoms of this level, such as fever. Patients with appendicitis generally have a fever if they have no symptoms; no test is required.
