According to the planned project, the train journey from Kaunas to Vilnius would take about 38 minutes, and to Panevėžys – 37 minutes. It would take 1 hour by train from Kaunas to Riga. 40 minutes to Tallinn – 3 hours. 18 minutes, and to Warsaw – 3 hours. 27 min.
Meanwhile, Vilnius would be reached not only through Kaunas, but also through Panevėžys. The latter can be reached by train from the capital in 57 minutes.
“There is an 8 minute train ride between Riga Central Station and Riga Airport. Then we travel to Panevėžys, from Panevėžys it is possible to travel directly to Kaunas or directly to Vilnius. It will be possible to travel directly to Vilnius without stopping in Kaunas or continue traveling to Warsaw. However, it will depend on the usefulness of the trains, which passengers will want to travel where, “said Ignas Degutis, Chief Financial Officer and Board Member of RB Rail AS.
“Then it will be possible to get to Berlin by night trains,” he added.
According to I. Degutis, it will be possible to get to Berlin from Lithuania in 12 hours. It is planned to be possible to travel at night on two trains: Tallinn-Riga-Kaunas-Warsaw and Vilnius-Kaunas-Warsaw-Berlin.
Rail Baltica is the largest railway infrastructure project in the history of the Baltic States, which will include the construction of an electrified European rail line along the entire Baltic Baltica route, which runs from Warsaw through Kaunas and Riga to Tallinn. The project also includes a separate Kaunas-Vilnius railway line.
The total length of the Rail Baltica railway line in the Baltic States is 870 km: in Lithuania – 392 km, in Latvia – 265 km, in Estonia – 213 km.
Construction of the project, whose estimated value is about 5.8 billion. It is the largest investment to improve mobility and travel, business, tourism and commerce opportunities in the region.
The project is expected to end in 2026.
