A statement issued by Benjamin Sumner Welles, Acting Secretary of State on July 23, 1940, did not officially recognize the forced incorporation of the Baltic States into the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The official policy of non-recognition of the occupation allowed the Lithuanian embassy in Washington and the consulates in New York and Chicago to continue to operate, and also provided an opportunity for the name of Lithuania to be heard around the world.

In commemoration, the Lithuanian leader emphasized that these days the international order is based on rules and principles and is once again being brutally broken.

According to the President, it is hard to believe that in the 21st century, Europe still dares to use military aggression and invade the sovereignty and territorial integrity of its independent neighbors. Ukraine and Sakartvel have a lot to pay for their chosen path, and fierce fighting is also taking place in the field of historical justice.

According to the Lithuanian leader, the unity and security of today’s Europe depend directly on the strength of the transatlantic connection.

“Without the active participation of the United States, Europe cannot remain united or secure. Without a strong transatlantic connection, Lithuania cannot be completely certain of its security and perhaps its existence. Therefore, relations with the United States will always be a a priority of strategic importance to us, “said the President, emphasizing that Lithuania, once it enters the” 2 percent club, “must keep up the pace and continue to take care of its own safety.

G. Nausėda wished that the memory of Sumner Welles’ statement would never fade, and that Lithuania and the United States of America would always have a special connection.

The event was intended to thank NATO allies in the United States for their policy of non-recognition of the occupation of the Baltic States.

After honoring the Lithuanian, Estonian, Latvian and American flags and the hymn ceremony, the guests were also welcomed by the President of the Seimas Viktoras Pranckietis, the President of the Supreme-Restorative Council Seimas Vytautas Landsbergis, President Valdas Adamkus, the Minister of Foreign Relations Linas Linkevičius, United States Ambassador Robert S. Gilchrist Emanuel Zinger, President of the United States Liaison Group.

Later, an arsenal and information exhibition was organized by the Rifle Union, the US Embassy and Soldiers, the NATO Capability Integration Unit at the M. Mažvydas Library, and the Orchestra of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and Arina gave a concert with the group Veto Bank.
