The Šiauliai chief is convinced that the government order is redundant and it is time to change it. The city police have launched an investigation into the mayor’s behavior.
After the photo, in which the mayor of Šiauliai, Artūras Visockas, shakes hands with the investor representative and who shares on his personal Facebook page, the mayor writes:
“We are both without masks, but safe! Strong handshake Because it’s time to get serious about jobs and the city’s economic future. “
And the same handshake to the member of Seimas Stasys Tumėnas from Šiauliai. Photo uploaded on Monday. The Seimas member says the protective masks were removed with the mayor just for a photo.
“The members of the Seimas are not exclusive, I am never without a mask, neither in the Seimas, nor in Vilnius, nor in Šiauliai. But there was a closed space, completely closed, a completely safe space. Well, and so it happened. It is probably Too bad this has happened, but thank God we didn’t put anyone in danger. In another photo, the conversation with the director of the administration is already taking place without masks, “says Seimas member S. Tumėnas.
The mayor is working from home this Friday and has refused to meet with journalists.
“If there is a desire to speak officially, please on Monday, now, no. Because I work remotely and I am not in a suit now,” says the Mayor of Šiauliai A. Visockas.
A. Visockas explains that he spoke on important economic issues for the city, and took photos without protective masks on purpose, which was to show that it was time to start talking about the economy, not security.
“There were quite a few people in the office and there was no threat to the public.” However, in this way it is possible to send a signal that if Šiauliai has already faced the disease, and Šiauliai has done it, it is time for us to talk about the works, “says A. Visockas.
The mayor justifies that now most people on the street do not follow the instructions for wearing masks or exclude them when the mask hangs from the chin or covers only the mouth but not the nose. The politician is convinced that it is time for the government to review its instructions on the use of masks.
“It would be a completely different matter, if the requirement to wear a mask is firm and clear, with fines, it would be where they really are needed. For example, a supermarket, a bus, a polyclinic. And if we try to require people to wear masks when walking alone through the city on the boulevard, then we will be very strange people, “said A. Visockas.
The Šiauliai interviewees admitted that the masks were already tired, but, in the opinion of the majority, the mayor should not act as he wanted, and not according to the rules.
“All right, in the office I did not read that in the room to anyone, but only among yours. But if someone approaches strangers, it is not that, it is not that. If you’re already careful, that’s for everyone. Apparently, our mayor is taking a risk. “
“It just came to our attention then. That mask, only people suffocate.”
“We are still washing our hands. Teaching everyone. Let’s get out of the clean quarantine.”
“That doesn’t say anything about that.”
“None of that, it’s time to let us go.”
“It just came to our attention then. Because the virus still doesn’t ask whether you are in power or not, it still catches up. So I think the masks will need to be worn for a long time. Even if the quarantine ends as a precaution. “
The behavior of the mayor of Šiauliai also encountered the Minister of Health. Public people are said to be an example of responsibility, not the other way around.
“For now, we should all act responsibly. And especially those people who are seen in society as public people,” says Minister Aurelijus Veryga.
Šiauliai police were also interested in the event.
“A statement has been received, so we have initiated administrative proceedings against that statement. The material will be collected, all circumstances will be evaluated and then a decision will be made,” says Gailutė Smagriūnienė, a police representative.
The mayor can be fined a minimum of € 250 for such misconduct. During the quarantine period, a total of 39 administrative crime reports were written for residents of the city and Šiauliai district.
