For a long time, the capital of Aukštaitija lived relatively calmly: the last case of COVID-19 was detected here only in early June. However, after a long silence alone, five new cases of dangerous coronovirus infection were recorded in the city and the district just last weekend alone.
The disease affected two members of the same family and three unrelated individuals. Epidemiologists estimate that more than six dozen Panevėžys residents may have had close contact with these patients. They will also be tested for coronavirus infection in the near future. It is not ruled out that the number of patients may increase. It is worrying that in many cases it is not possible to determine how infected people are: Panevėžys people are urged to take special precautions.
The company is disinfected
According to Eugenijus Vilčinskas, Director of the Panevėžys Department of the National Center for Public Health, a middle-aged man fell ill at the end of the week. It soon became apparent that his wife was also suffering from a coronavirus infection, although she did not experience any of the virus symptoms.
Currently, the woman is isolated at home and the man needed medical help; He is being treated at the Panevėžys Republican Hospital. Epidemiologists have not been able to determine where the family has contracted, they have not gone abroad, nor have they attended parties or trainings where there may be a large number of people.
Following this case, one of the largest factories in Panevėžys, PKC, where the patient worked, was disinfected on Friday. According to Sekundė, the woman did not go to work all week before COVID-19 approval, most of the factory workers currently have annual vacations. Colleagues who interacted with the woman were instructed to isolate themselves.
“We estimate that about three dozen people had close contact with the sick couple. Throughout the weekend, our specialists worked trying to connect with these people. They must isolate and perform the COVID-19 test, ”emphasized E. Vilčinskas.
Company representatives could not be reached for an official comment.
Unknown infection routes
The other three confirmed coronavirus cases over the weekend were unrelated to this family outbreak. Two of the patients are of solid age, over ninety years old, so due to age and comorbidities, they are treated in hospital.
“Although these are quite respectable people from Panevėžys, they also had contacts with those around them, we are currently explaining with whom the patients interacted,” said E. Vilčinskas.
COVID-19 has also been established for a young resident of the Panevėžys district. About three dozen people were found to be in close contact with this patient: family members, employees of the company where the infected person works. The Panevėžys district resident also participated in the trainings before confirming the diagnosis, so the circle of people in close contact may be even larger. Everyone was also told to isolate themselves and take the test. The infected person lived in the suburbs, so most of those who had contact with him were city dwellers.
It is already clear that a Kėdainiai resident was infected with one of the sick people from Panevėžys.
“We have several possible fireplaces. Everything is very fresh, so the situation may still change,” said E. Vilčinskas.
According to the spokesman of the Panevėžys Republican Hospital, Vytautas Riaubiškis, three patients are currently being treated in the hospital, one of them is more difficult due to the elderly and comorbidities, the other two are milder.
A total of 26 cases of COVID-19 have been recorded in Panevėžys since the start of the pandemic: currently 4 people are sick, 21 have recovered and one has died.
A total of 9 diseases were detected in the Panevėžys district, currently one person is ill, 7 have recovered and one has died.
According to Monday’s data, a total of 1,947 people were diagnosed with coronavirus in Lithuania, 254 people are still sick, 1,601 have recovered and 81 people are currently in isolation.
