– Bayern started the season 10-5 in a fantastic way. What is the main reason for a great start?
– We have a good talented team that is ready to fight in every game. We are all focused and motivated for daily work, not just for matches. The team has a great atmosphere. A victorious start in the Euroleague, especially on the road, has built confidence in our strengths.
– Andrea Trinchieri has turned Bayern upside down: one of the worst clubs in the Euroleague last year became one of the leaders this season. How has it affected the team and your game?
– Coach Trinchieri is a detail coach. He gives us a lot of trivia and tries to graft them every day. On the one hand, he is very demanding, but also very charismatic, bringing positive energy daily. He passed that energy on to the whole team and that is one of the main reasons why we are where we are now.
– Your talent is valued in Europe, but since 2016 you only play in Munich. Why, despite interest in the Euroleague, do you stay at Bayern until at least 2022?
– I feel good at Bayern Club and in Munich. I live here with my wife and two daughters. It is very important that the best conditions can also be given here. And they are as happy as I am.
When I arrived in Munich, we moved forward every year. Last season alone was not what we expected. But this year we got up and got back on track. Motivates. I feel so happy here that I don’t see any reason why I should go anywhere else.
– During those years, you have repeatedly joined the fight against “Žalgiris”. Which opponent was the most unfavorable for you?
– I would not single out a player. But it is always difficult to play against “Žalgiris”, especially in Kaunas. Of course, now without the fans, all away games are the same. But Lithuania has always had a great basketball tradition and it has always been a pleasure to play on one of the most beautiful basketball courts in Europe.
Until last season, everyone thought the team’s greatest strength was Shar. But coach Schiller is doing an incredible job this season and Žalgiris is playing fantastic basketball. Every game against this club is a challenge.
– Which story do you associate most with Lithuanian basketball?
– It would be related to a national team match in the 1990s. I grew up watching the Yugoslav team at that time, which was one of the best in the world at the time. Probably a game in 1995, the final of the European Championship, when we won gold, against the team in which Sabonis was the undisputed leader of the national team, I got more stuck. Those games always remind me of the connection between Lithuanian and Serbian basketball.
