The community vaccines against COVID-19 developed by BioNTech and Pfizer have been vaccinated against Lithuanians since December 27, and Moderna vaccines, since January 18.

Since the start of the vaccination, IWT has begun collecting information on the side effects of the vaccine and has delivered the collected material before January 28, Thursday.

During that time, 68,491 people were vaccinated with both COVID-19 vaccines, 84,586 vaccines were administered, and the ICD received 311 primary reports of adverse drug reactions.

“It’s 0.37 percent. Of the number of doses vaccinated,” said G. Anddrulionis, director of IWT.

He assured that this number is not exceptional compared to the number of reports in other European countries.

“It just came to our notice then. There are countries where there is a higher percentage of adverse reaction notifications. Suppose Norway. In Norway, it is 0.48 percent. In Ireland, it is 0.33 percent. Estonia has a figure. slightly higher than 0.8%.

But there are also states where much less are registered. This is Germany: 0.06 percent, ”said G. Andrdrionis.

297 reports were related to exposure to BioNTech and Pfizer. Headache, general weakness, fever, chills, and muscle pain (myalgia) have been reported frequently.

Rugilė Pilvinienė, senior advisor to the ICD’s Department of Pharmacovigilance and Poisoning Information, said some residents also reported reactions that were not mentioned in the package inserts.

These include numbness of the tongue, face or hands, higher heart rate, increased blood pressure.

Of the 311 reports received by IWT, 13 reported serious side effects from the vaccines.

These effects were assessed as serious when they required a referral to a healthcare facility or when they were very important.

R.Pilvinienė said residents reported severe headache or body pain, dizziness, fainting or feeling faint, nausea, vomiting, increased heart rate, shortness of breath.

One reportedly reported a severe allergic reaction, but according to R. Pilvinienė, it is unclear whether the person actually encountered it.

“There is a case of serious side effect when anaphylaxis has been reported: a person has low and weak blood pressure.

However, we cannot say for the moment that it was really an anaphylactic reaction, because such reactions also occur due to the psychogenic effect, due to the needle stick, ”said the IWT representative.

One patient reported severe swelling of the lymph nodes after the vaccine and another reported swelling of the muscles.

R. Pilvinienė said that a person who had been vaccinated with the first dose of COVID-19 seven days ago had died. However, he stressed that after the vaccination, the person did not experience any side effects and his death had nothing to do with the vaccination.

“The patient suffered a sudden death, which the reporting physician considered unrelated to vaccination. He was just a very risky patient. After receiving such information, we reached exactly the same conclusion,” said the senior advisor of IWT.
