After the summer walks, when everyone returns home, such popular places around Vilnius as Šilėnai or Varnikai are likely it will look like Iron Wolf Street again during rush hour.
Perhaps it should be remembered that due to the ongoing pandemic one has to stay away from other people, but I don’t want it on the weekends, not just because of COVID-19. So where to go?
Santaka railway bridge (+ suspension)
From Vilnius to Pabradė you can find at least 6 Bridges “monkeys”. Some of them are tragic emergencies, as in Lucy through the Neris. The strongest and most stable stretched through Žeimenas, near the Santaka garden community. Nothing extreme, but it is also a huge advantage for those who do not like height and appreciate a more solid base underfoot.
You will find a more interesting place behind this bridge just a few minutes walk along the path. The banks of the Neris are connected here by an impressive-looking old railway bridge, with steel arches spanning the river.
The extremely photogenic-looking old bridge has been out of use for several decades, left to rust. Trains now pass him on a new bridge that may not have the allure of an industrial heritage, but is at least safer.
Some very interesting stories about the old bridge could not be found, but it is worth visiting for purely aesthetic reasons. The symmetry of the metal structures calms the thoughts, it is interesting to see the old stainless steel railings that are preserved and the views of the lush vegetation along the banks of the river are enchanting.
Cross quarry
The bad news is that this deposit of sand and gravel is no longer so “undiscovered”, so you will probably not be the only one visiting it anymore. Filming for the fourth season of the Netflix series Stranger Things even took place here in February. By the way, a few years ago, the Lithuanian “Between Gray Clouds” was filmed here.
The good news is that there is plenty of room, nooks for photography too, so all visitors would be outside, even if there were a lot here.
The most popular shots at this location are the rails that plunge into overgrown water. However, the most beautiful views still open from the top of the quarry.
The quarry has been forgotten in the woods, which deserve individual praise. Following the Google Maps navigation before the quarry, they had to wander a bit, but the greenery here is like a picture. Straight trees in the sky rise skyward from reddish jams, and I haven’t seen such large areas covered in heather in a long time.
Rudamina Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord
This year, many people who gave in to the attraction of “ruin tourism” went from Vilnius to Merkinė. Here are the ruins of an interesting history of the Republic of Paulava. The place is definitely worth seeing, but it is neither deserted nor empty; In a well-organized setting, you will likely come across weddings and hikers.
And on the way, stop in Rudamina, where the ruins of the Church of the Conversion of the Lord are wasting time. The Orthodox houses of worship destroyed during World War II remained unbuilt.
The first Orthodox temple of Rudamina was built in 1866. in the old St. In the Catholic Church of the Virgin Mary and named Church of the Conversion of the Lord. 1874–1876 it was dismantled and a new stone church was built in its place, of which the ruins now remain. A wooden cemetery of Santa Rudamina was built from the old temple. Chapel of Nicholas the Wonderworker, still standing nearby.
During the First World War, the stone church was robbed. XX a. in the interwar period it was added to the Church of the Holy Mother of God in Vilnius. 1944 during the war the church was destroyed, then it was not rebuilt.
Although the ruins are on the main street in Rudaminos, there are also residential buildings nearby, and when you look at the red brick building, it seems that you don’t even hear the surrounding noise. The bottles of alcohol placed inside suggest that the situation here is likely to change at night.
