Minister proposes that Vilnius inspect all employees of bars and cafes

Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga offers the capital’s municipality to test employees of bars, cafes and restaurants on COVID-19 if they refuse to reduce their working hours.

“I understand that the city is questioning how reasonable the recommendation is. If there is any doubt for the city, I think that the National Center for Public Health should advise the municipality to test the staff of bars and entertainment venues and see what the situation is there, “the minister told reporters on Seimas on Thursday.

“If the tests show they are infected or have a large number of infected, that may be enough evidence to speak of additional restrictions in this area,” he said.

On Wednesday, the National Public Health Center (NVSC) called on the Vilnius city municipality to temporarily restrict active leisure activities indoors and shorten the working hours of bars.

According to the NVSC, the restriction of activities such as group sports training, dance and singing studies is necessary to address the unfavorable epidemiological situation due to the spread of the coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

Responding to these recommendations, Povilas Poderskis, director of the Vilnius City Municipal Administration, told BNS that the municipality would not be in a rush to make decisions. According to him, municipal decisions should be based on data, and when coronavirus cases are identified in specific institutions, it is necessary to work with them, but not limit the entire sector.

A. Veryga, in turn, emphasized that in Vilnius and other large cities, unlike Radviliškis or Raseinai, it is difficult to trace the chain of infections.

“I think Vilnius could do something else, if they don’t want such restrictions and don’t see the point of doing it, at least talk to the owner of the bars so that the registration (of visitors – BNS) is universal. There are practices that are recorded by text message, and if it spreads, at least those people can be found. It is impossible to trace now, “said the minister.

He said that no coercive measures had been planned at the national level in Vilnius.

“We can make decisions, but the municipality implements them,” said A. Veryga.

Prime Minister: Stronger conditions will be needed when spread routes can no longer be traced

It will be necessary to tighten the conditions of the emergency situation when it is no longer possible to trace the routes of spread of the coronavirus, to identify foci, says Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis.

“Even though the numbers are getting worse everywhere, we still have a situation where we can still track both transmission routes and foci. “… If we approach a situation in which we see that the situation at the national level is no longer traceable and controlled, it will be necessary to translate those recommendations into the instructions of the Government or the instructions of the operations manager,” said the first minister to journalists at the Seimas on Thursday.

It also called on the Vilnius authorities to take into account the recommendations of the National Public Health Center (NVSC) to temporarily restrict active leisure activities indoors and reduce working hours in bars as the number of illnesses increases. in the capital.

The fact that there are (bars and clubs in high-risk places) and in Vilnius we already have bars and clubs, where this fireplace is not the first time, it is very unfortunate that these recommendations are not heeded, but again, here are the municipal decisions. As for local measures such as local quarantine, the law requires that there be a request from the municipality, ”said the Prime Minister.

“If no action is taken, the situation could change drastically and I hope that the Vilnius municipality will show leadership and listen to the recommendations made by the NVSC and take the necessary decisions,” said the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister stressed that the Government cannot introduce local measures without a municipal appeal, but only toughen the rules for the entire sector.

“The government can accept for individual sectors, such as catering or another sector, it can be done, but it will be at the national level,” Skvernel said.
