$ 20 billion response from Russia and China to Boeing and Airbus taken off for almost a decade

The CR929 is a competitor to the Boeing 787. This wide-body aircraft will seat 258-280 passengers in a three-class configuration. It will be able to fly 12,000 km without stopping for fuel and it will be very modern. The aircraft, which has the obvious characteristics of a Boeing 787 and an Airbus A350, will become a competitor to these aircraft. Russia will produce the wings, China will produce the fuselage, and engines are likely to be purchased on international markets. However, in 2027, the CR929 will definitely not appear on the market yet.

A project worth about $ 20 billion is reported to be stalling. It is now clear that CR929 will take office in 2028 or even 2029. The reason is the lack of communication between partners.

Irkut, a Russian company that is part of the Russian program, says it is difficult to work with partners in China. Although this complaint is not detailed, some areas of the project are questionable. How will the CR929 be assembled when the wings and fuselage are made in different countries? Furthermore, different suppliers of parts and materials are still being negotiated: both parties want more suppliers from their country.

There are other problems. China reserves the exclusive right to sell CR929 in the Chinese market. Russia, meanwhile, remains the rest of the world. Seems an attractive offer? Not from afar.

The Chinese aviation market is growing. Since airlines can also be pressured here by political means, COMAC is expected to easily sell 450 CR929 aircraft in China alone. Meanwhile, Russia can only sell between 50 and 120 of these planes. Furthermore, it is difficult to predict whether this aircraft will really be of interest to buyers abroad. Yes, it will probably be cheaper than competitors from Boeing and Airbus, but these are familiar names with service centers at all major airports. Russian and Chinese planes outside these countries are certainly not hijacked.

CR929 will probably come out later than planned. Will that plane still be able to boast that it’s cheaper than the Boeing and Airbus models? It will probably be cheaper, but the big manufacturers have so many advantages, including training and service centers, that it is difficult to predict the success of a Sino-Russian project.
