Only workers who did not experience any characteristic symptoms of coronavirus infection were included in the global prophylaxis study. In case of fever or other clinical signs, the staff were examined according to the internal procedures of the institution and their PCR tests were performed in other laboratories.

“The epidemiological crisis in Lithuania in recent weeks is also reflected in the morbidity rates of our doctors,” says Jelena Kutkauskienė, director of the Vilnius Republican Hospital. – The number of sick employees in our institution has been growing rapidly since the end of November.

Unfortunately, preventive examinations are carried out according to the procedure provided by legal acts, investigating between 10 and 20%. staff working directly with patients is no longer sufficient during this period, and we are concerned that new cases of COVID-19 are being reported among staff from different disciplines and in almost all departments. “

According to the head of the hospital, steps should be taken to identify asymptomatic COVID-19 workers, isolate them and control the spread of the virus in the institution in a very short period of time. Currently, 329 employees of the Vilnius Republic University Hospital are unable to work due to COVID-19: 57 doctors, 91 nurses, 68 nursing assistants, 113 employees from other positions. All of them are insulated according to an approved isolation procedure, capable of working remotely from home.

According to J. Kutkauskienė, even the hospital team weakened by the coronavirus remains ready to provide the necessary assistance to patients.

“Although the situation is not easy, it is still being managed, because the planned operations at the Vilnius Republican University Hospital have been postponed since last week, so the main flow of our patients is people seeking emergency care.” explains the director of the institution. – Due to the precarious epidemiological situation in the country, patients remain in the hospital no longer than necessary and are transferred to other collaborating personal care facilities or discharged for subsequent home treatment as soon as their health allows.

In this way, space is provided for so-called “extreme” patients who need medical attention in the here and now. We also take care of the reorganization of work on a day-to-day basis, delegating employees to work in those departments where there is a greater shortage of personnel ”.

The situation, although not easy, is still manageable.

According to J. Kutkauskienė, the goal is to stabilize the epidemiological situation within the institution as soon as possible, so the general preventive examination of employees for COVID-19 will be repeated to the same extent next week.

During this study, the RVUL was visited by scientists from the Center for Natural Sciences, who took samples from various surfaces in the hospital environment to investigate and discover a possible correlation between the amount of virus elements on different surfaces and the morbidity of personnel in the hospitals. relevant departments.
