The State Food and Veterinary Service (SFVS) reports that this is the second large poultry farm of its kind in Poland affected by the disease in the last week. The virus has killed more than 1.6 million people in Poland this year. birds, the report said.

A serious contagious disease has been reported following the sudden death of more than 1,000 reared birds and examination of samples from their carcasses. Polish veterinarians have already taken all necessary measures to prevent the spread of the virus from the farm and the introduction of live birds, poultry or animal by-products from the outbreak site.

The necessary protection and surveillance zones have been established around the outbreak and the birds have been slaughtered, cleaned and disinfected. An epizootic study is also underway to explain how the virus entered the farm. This is already an outbreak of 34 highly pathogenic avian flu confirmed in Polish poultry farms in 2020.

The SFVS once again reminds Lithuanian poultry farmers of the importance of implementing biosecurity measures, as the main carriers and distributors of the avian influenza virus are wild birds. It is recommended not to give water to poultry in open water, to store their food in a way that protects it from wild birds, and to wash clothes, disinfect shoes and instruments as often as possible, avoid visiting other housing areas of birds and monitor bird health.

It is important to immediately inform the nearest SFVS department (tel. 8 800 40403) if changes are observed or if a wild water bird is found dead. Specialists will select samples for laboratory testing.

The SFVS recalls that the most commonly detected subtype of H5N8 virus in Europe today is not dangerous for humans, and that there is no risk of contracting the virus through fresh birds or their products. However, as a precautionary measure, humans should avoid touching sick or dead birds, thus reducing the potential risk of virus transmission or infection. It is very important for those who trade in Poland or buy manure, live birds and hatching eggs from this country to choose properly and carefully the suppliers and products from those regions where avian influenza has not been detected.
