Health deteriorated during the first pregnancy

In telling her story, Sigutė claims that she now feels great and can live her life normally. Even recalling past health problems, the woman continues to smile, although she still remembers well the time she found out she had kidney problems.

“I was living normally, everything seemed to be going well until I got pregnant in 2008. Then my health suddenly deteriorated and the investigation revealed that I had problems with my kidneys. Doctors diagnosed the genetic disease and only then did I remember spending a lot of time in hospitals as a child due to kidney inflammation. But I came as a teenager and it seems that I grew up with problems, so everything was forgotten ”, says Sigutė without losing a positive.

As you recall, she had no complications during her pregnancy, so after giving birth she simply did not respond to the identified problems, no further research was done, and she remained alive. Everything changed drastically after the second pregnancy.

The health of the woman who was expecting a second child began to deteriorate rapidly, and after the investigation, it turned out that the kidney problems did not go away, they only got worse. Under the supervision of doctors, he underwent regular medical checks, but soon took more drastic measures.

“It started to get very bad and due to kidney disease the doctors decided that it was mandatory to give birth prematurely. That was in 2011. In 2012, I had a biopsy and I found Alporto syndrome, which was only genetically confirmed in 2020, ”says the woman.

After giving birth to her second child, she was already seriously concerned about his health and continued to visit a nephrologist until it finally became clear that the kidneys could no longer perform their function and needed hemodialysis.

After dialysis: shopping

A woman with a smile recalls the years when she had to undergo tedious procedures.

“I live in the Jurbarkas district, so I went to Kaunas for dialysis. I drove the car myself for the procedures and then went shopping. It may be more difficult for other people, but even if I really didn’t feel very well, I was able to visit the store, ”says Sigutė laughing.

1.5 years ago, a gift received from a stranger completely changed Sigutė's life: he saved not only her but also her children.

Remember that the hardest time was in the summer, when the exhausting heat was bothering you, which was already exhausting, and the dialysis itself contributed to a much worse feeling. In such a case, the woman went straight home after the procedures. Sigutė describes herself as one of those who clings to life in all four and never gives up, perhaps that is why she was able to do everything herself and take care of the two children at home.

“It just came to our attention then. I was constantly tired, so the quality of life deteriorated not only for me but also for my children. For a while, they even looked after me, brought me drinks, food or just did something very elementary. that I couldn’t pay on my own. In the end, due to exhaustion, I couldn’t dedicate enough time and attention to my children, which should have been difficult, “the woman recalls.

After receiving a call about a possible donor, the woman did not hesitate to go to the hospital to do the necessary tests and assures that she was not afraid of the transplant itself, and that the biggest concern was the possible reaction of the body to the anesthesia.

“I was just afraid that I would not be able to wake up after the anesthesia,” laughs Sigut, remembering the pre-operative period.

He gave a name to the donated kidney

A resident of the Jurbarkas district says that in the first week after the operation, the recovery was not very easy.

“It was difficult to recover, I was constantly dizzy, it was difficult to walk. But after the first week, things started to get fast and I wanted to go home the second week, but the doctors wouldn’t let me. I finally left after three weeks, although the doctors said it was already too short a period. In the meantime, I had absolutely no psychological problems. They offered me the help of psychologists, but I didn’t feel the need to do it. Finally, I even gave the kidney a name: Saulytė. I know a man gave it to me, but I decided to call him Saulyte, ”the woman laughs.

Now, 1.5 years after the transplant, the woman is enjoying a return to quality of life and urges other recipients not to fear the transplant.

“I know that people are afraid of the amount of medicine, but I can assure you that they drink much less than with dialysis,” he says.

But most importantly, according to Sigutė, he can lead a normal life, which is what he most wanted.

Thankful for saving children’s lives

“During the transplant anniversary, I thought a lot about the donor who donated my kidney and what he would say to his family. I can say the same now: I am very grateful, not so much for helping me, but for greatly improving the lives of my children. Now they can enjoy childhood instead of caring for a sick mother.

Perhaps not all family members of donors understand how much they help other people, so I want to emphasize that it is not just one person who is saved, but all their family members, ”Sigutė says.

Now the woman assures that life is almost the same as before a difficult diagnosis. You can spend time with your family, without thinking about dialysis, travel, eat a variety of foods, and enjoy the daily routine.
