Listen to Prince’s 1979 version of ‘I Could Never Take Your Man’s Place’


Prince’s estate has shared the singer’s original 1979 version of “I Never Never Take the Place of Your Man,” which Prince would revisit years later to Sign O ‘the Times. The streamlined demo appears in the next massive reissue dedicated to Prince’s double album in 1987.

The 1979 version of “I Could Never Take Your Man’s Place” is structurally similar to the final version, with Prince using the same verses and choruses in both performances. However, in the Sign O ‘the Times In the performance, Prince would amplify the party atmosphere of the song and double the length of the track using a scorching guitar solo and instrumental breaks.

Prince originally recorded “I Could Never Take His Man’s Place” on Hollywood Sound Recorders, Studio A, on May 23, 1979, when he was working on his self-titled 1979 EP. Prince would remove the vault and re-record the track in June. from 1986 while building his Dream Factory and Crystal ball, which later became Sign O ‘the Times.

The 1979 track is the oldest recording of the Sign O ‘the Times reissue, a massive collection that also features over 45 unreleased studio recordings, a record that compiles the mixes, releases and B sides of the album; a live concert in 1987 in Utrecht, the Netherlands; and an extra concert movie from the 1987 Prince’s New Year’s Eve show in Paisley Park.
