Link to Fitbit with Google Assistant to ask about sleep wellness

Fitbit started rolling out Google Assistant from Versa 3 and Sense yesterday. As part of this, users can now link their Fitbit accounts to Google Assistant for basic sleep and wellness data.

From the Google Assistant Settings list, scroll to the new “Wellness” menu where you can “Manage your sleep, exercise and nutrition data.” At the moment, only “Sleep” is listed and Fitbit is supported. Tapping “Connect” on the next page will ask you to agree to the terms. You will then be taken to the Fitbit mobile application or website to allow access to Google.

Once completed, you can ask the assistant two similar questions:

  • How did i sleep last night
  • Summarize my sleep.

Google will reply that “Since yesterday, you have slept in a total x hours and xx minutes” format which may be an account for sleep. It’s the same answer on phones, auxiliary smart displays and speakers. There are no visuals or graphs, while you cannot ask about other days / periods. When you make an inquiry, the assistant suggests “Use the app on your watch or mobile instead.”

At launch, this feature set is very basic and is probably prompted on the Fitbit Smartwatch. However, given the nature of the assistant, commands work everywhere.

On the privacy front, Google states that “Fitbit Sleep Data is temporarily stored and used to provide you with information about your sleep, health and fitness. Fitbit Sleep data is not used for Google ads. “

Looking at the description found on the Assistant’s Wellness Settings page, more functionality is coming. Commands that allow you to retrieve more data about the latest activity will be helpful. For example, getting a metric about your last run would be a useful option to tap through the app.
