LG’s roll-up smartphone will arrive early next year with a BOE display

While it doesn’t have any of that folding action, at least so far, LG is apparently working on a roll-up smartphone, which was rendered in 3D render in August last year. Those renderings are based on a patent applied for by LG and sometimes with patents, nothing comes out of them in the form of a real product.

This time things seem to be different. According to a report from LG’s home in Korea, the company will launch the currently code-rolled roll-out smartphone Project B sometime in early 2021.

Interestingly, the display panel will be provided by BOE, and not by LG Display, for whatever reason. Prototype production is already underway at LG’s factory in Pyeongtaek. About 1,000 to 2,000 prototypes are produced, and it usually takes three to four rounds of prototypes before the final stage of the product is reached.

Project B is aimed at restoring LG as an innovative player in the smartphone space, where it has been losing money for 20 consecutive quarters. This device should remake LG’s brand image, and is named after CEO Kwon Bong-seok.

Along with Project B, LG is said to launch a traditional-looking flagship phone in the first half of 2021, codenamed Rainbow, and a “horizontal” smartphone to arrive in the second half of this year, named in Wing code. It is unclear what exactly this implies.
