Leila Cavett, 21, was last seen July 26 in South Florida, just hours before her 2-year-old son, Kamdyn, was found without running into the apartment complex in Miramar, running George Piro, the special agent in the service of the FBI’s field office in Miami.
Piro said the woman arrived in Florida alone with her son a day before she was last seen and spent time in Hollywood, Miramar and Fort Lauderdale Beach before her “very, very mysterious” disappearance.
Her car was found July 28 in Hollywood, Piro said in a statement.
The FBI is not “necessarily ready to divulge any information” they have, Piro said, but authorities are investigating “every nook and cranny.”
“Together with our other law enforcement partners, we strive aggressively for a large number of leads,” he said.
Cavett, he said, is about five feet, four inches long and about 120 pounds. The name of her son “Kamdyn” is tattooed on her right inner arm and a Jesus fish tattoo is on her right wrist.
The toddler is ‘safe and being cared for,’ “he said.
There are people familiar with their disappearance
Informing the public to come forward with information, Piro said authorities believe people “familiar with the circumstances surrounding Leila’s disappearance will remain in our community while some leave the area.”
In an effort to gather more information from the public, the agency is releasing several photos, including one of Cavett’s mid-to-late 90s Silverado 3500 pickup truck and another of them working in a separate auto authorities to identify.
Javaron Buckley, a lawyer hired by the family, said the Cavett family has no idea why they would have been to Florida. She only has distant relatives in Tampa, the attorney said earlier.
Buckley said police have seized a man who matches the description of a person seen with Cavett, but released him for lack of evidence.
“The clock works against (police) when they arrest people for the purpose of investigation,” Buckley said.
He could not tell CNN whether the man had allowed herself to be with Cavett in Hollywood, where she was last seen, because police have asked the lawyer not to discuss that aspect of the case.
