From the arrival of Nimu to the departure of Raphael, the third season Legacy Surprisingly, though, there was nothing quite as glorious as the jaw-dropping throws at us in Thursday’s episode, which featured a long-awaited performance. Salvatore: Musical.
Under the bright lights of the auditorium of the Salvatore School, Josie, Caleb, Jade and Lizzie – as Elena, Damon, Stephen and Caroline – told the story of the founding of the institution, hitting many iconic beats. Vampire Diaries In the process: Stephen and Elena’s first meeting, Stephen and Damon’s dramatic reunion, Elena’s seemingly endless parade of eternal back-end-doppelgangers between the brothers, and Klaus’ (played by this week’s Interlapping Monster!) Multi-figure donation to the school.
Speaking of Klaus, we also got an amazing performance of Hope’s “Forever and Forever”, who spent most of the episode rallying. Against Musical portrayal of his family. (But more on that later.)
Of course, Lizzie’s surprise was better than the letter she received from Caroline, especially since it was read by someone other than Candice King (aka Caroline Forbes) in Voice Isover, which marked her first official “appearance.” Legacy. (Click here for our gallery of each crossover Vampire Diaries Universe, which has now been updated to include this episode.)
And if you missed any letters, here are Caroline’s full words: “Dear Lizzie, I hope this can give you a little insight into who she was. When I was your age, I felt like I was just messing around, like I was waiting to be my best version so my real life could start. But it wasn’t becoming the vampire that changed everything. Change is a series of small moments that form on top of each other, like steps on the side of a mountain. Your life does not stop until you do everything. It is already happening. You are already changing moment by moment. And Elizabeth, there’s nothing wrong with you. The chemistry of your brain creates unique challenges for you, but you are not broken. You’re evolving and changing every day, and it’s beautiful to watch. “
Below, executive producer Julie Pel ફિલ્ fields out some of the TVline’s burning questions from the episode:
TVline | If there was a musical about my life, and I was still living in the city, I would like to live there. Should we imagine that Damon and Elena politely declined their invitation?
[Laughs] Let’s imagine they can’t find a babysitter when the parents are out.
TVline | Despite it being a memorized cameo, we finally got to show it. What did you ask there?
As you know, Candice is a good friend of Marie and Brett and has a soft spot in her heart for this show. She has said for years, he would show up one day, but he wanted a break after that Vampire Diaries And Original. She wanted to go out for a while and live a non-Caroline Forbes life. But she’s always said, “If you never want something small or simple, let me know.” So I just sent a text and he said, “Exactly.” And then nine months passed, we really needed to do it because of the COVID shutdown.
TVline | Hopefully singing in the end was a nice surprise. I didn’t know she could sing.
There are some artists who are very good at singing, who may have a theatrical background, but they don’t like to sing anymore. They just can’t enjoy it, or they don’t want to get together [singing and acting]. When we did the Talent Show, Daniel [Rose Russell] It was like, “No. Hope has no talent that she is interested in sharing with anyone. But when we were coming up with this episode, she came up with, “So, Brett, you know I’m gonna…” and she was, “Oh, really?” She wrote it because it was coming from the place of her character that she was working on for a moment, and it just happened in the song. That’s what worked for me. And I cry every time.
TVline | When we talk about music, who do we give credit to?
The episode was a collaboration between author Thomas Brandon, who also wrote the songs for the talent show Josie and Landon. It is our little secret weapon for musical content. But we were doing a lot more songs than at the Talent Show, so I asked him if he wanted to find a partner for someone out of heavy eating. I approached my friend Michael Gracini, who directed The Greatest Showman And together he spent years developing the songs [Benj] Pasek and [Justin] Paul. Any time he came to town and was dropped off by my house, I could hear different demo versions over the years. So I knew he had a knack for it. I was like, “Do you know anyone who isn’t as famous as Pacek and Paul yet?” He said, “In fact, I’ve just done a project with this guy Chris Reed in London, and I think he’s the next Pace and Paul.” So I said, “Send it my way,” and he did, and it turned out to be a really tremendous partnership. … I also need to shout out to our incredible choreographer Onda Onda Kohl. She came up with the idea for Tango.
TVline | How familiar was Chris with this universe? The lyrics all felt very true to that feeling.
Chris had never seen it, so he had to do a quick binary. But, as he did so, it was very fresh in his head and hitting all the true notes.
TVline | This whole experience, where it all started 11 years ago, must be cathartic again.
I think. You’ve got a whole range of people working on this crew, some who have been with us ever since Vampire Diaries And Original. So it was a lot of fun for them. And you also have people who are new, who were probably fans and viewers of this show in the past, so they got to bring their own perspective. One of the reasons it works so well is because Thomas wrote from a fan’s point of view, not on [the original show]. He could be a fan of social media, making fun of us in a way that we might not have been able to make fun of ourselves.
TVline | Finally, about that final twist: what’s after Alyssa MG’s apparent betrayal?
Nothing good ahead. Next week’s episode 2 was written as the final writing of the season, so all the minor character things released in the musical episode are finishing. There are betrayals, tragedies, epiphanies. Next week is really a pretty big episode for all the characters, and then we essentially launch a new chapter.
Bonus scoop | We also chatted with Kelly Bryant about kissing Jolly with Jade. Here’s what he says about that relationship: “Josie isn’t exactly fast in things. She needed to learn a lesson before she could make the big jump, and Jade was a big lesson for her. He said openly, ‘This place is not right for me.’ Josie has been feeling that way for a while now. After really struggling with his addiction he gave up his magic. And now he lives in one place Surrounded By magic. She knows it all, so to hear someone say that they are removing themselves from an unwanted environment is something that Josie definitely needs to hear. This is what really kicks him in the gear in taking the necessary steps to take care of himself.
