TOPLINE

Former Vice President Joe Biden’s leadership over President Donald Trump expanded to 15 points in a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday, while Trump’s approval rating fell 6 points to just 36%.

KEY FACTS

The survey of 1,273 registered voters, conducted between July 9-13, showed that Biden’s lead increased from 8 points in mid-June to 15 points now, with Biden 52% supporting Trump’s 37%.

Biden had the highest earnings among independent voters, who favor him over Trump 51% to 34%, above a 3-point margin in June.

Biden is favored by a 28-point margin for addressing racial inequality, a 24-point margin for addressing the coronavirus pandemic, and a 19-point margin for handling a crisis.

Biden is also favored over Trump by 5 points in the economy, a measure by which Republican candidates tend to dominate, compared to a deficit of 5 points in June, while Trump’s approval of the handling of the economy has dropped from 7 positive points to 9 points underwater.

Trump’s general approval was also affected, falling from 42% in June to 36% now, while his disapproval increased from 55% to 60%.

Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic is rated even worse, with 35% of voters saying they approve of his response to the virus, compared with 62% saying they disapprove of it.

Crucial quote

“Yes, there are still 16 weeks until Election Day, but this is a very unpleasant real-time vision of what the future could be for President Trump.” There is no advantage, no silver lining, or an encouraging trend hidden somewhere in this poll for the president, “said Tim Malloy, a polling analyst at Quinnipiac University.

News Peg

Quinnipiac’s results are just the latest in a long series of negative polls for the president. Biden leads by 8 points on the RealClearPolitics average in recent polls, compared to a 4-point lead in May.

Big number

Sixty-five%. Despite recent White House attacks on Dr. Anthony Fauci, nearly two-thirds of voters trust his information about the virus compared to 26% who don’t. The reverse is true for Trump: 67% say they don’t trust the president’s coronavirus information, while only 30% trust it. This is one of several recent surveys showing Fauci the most trusted voice on the virus.

Critical boss

Trump rejected what he calls “repression polls” during a speech in the White House rose garden on Tuesday. He cited “thousands of boats with Trump signs” and “cyclists who ride miles and miles with pride with their signs” as examples of how he is doing well against Biden.
