Lawyer found dead in upstate New York may be related to the New Jersey shooting at the judge’s house


A man possibly involved in the fatal shooting of the son of a federal court judge in New Jersey was found dead in New York’s Sullivan County on Monday afternoon, according to multiple reports.

The man, a New York City attorney, is being investigated in connection with the shooting, a law enforcement official and a judicial official told the Associated Press. The man had appeared before the judge in the past, officials said.

Private Steven Nevel, a spokesman for Troop F of the New York State Police, told Fox News that the FBI was on the scene in the city of Rockland to determine if the body found there was related to the shooting in the House of the United States District Court Judge Esther Salas in North Brunswick.

The man was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police officials said. Additional information was not immediately available.

On Monday morning, an FBI Newark spokesman confirmed to Fox News that police were doing official business in New York, but could not confirm the death or his link to the Salas family-related case.

According to the New York Post, police and the FBI were on their way to New York City to investigate their connection to a weapon found near the scene.

Federal, state and local law enforcement were searching for the gunman who fatally shot Salas’s son and wounded her husband while disguised as a FedEx worker.

Salas’ son Daniel Anderl, 20, was killed and her husband, defense attorney Mark Anderl, 63, is in hospital after they were shot at around 5 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.

Salas was in the basement at the time and was not injured, according to the Associated Press.

The gunman fled in a car, authorities said.

Daniel, a university student, was her only son, authorities said. He was scheduled to return shortly to Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, where he was named to the Dean’s List this spring.

“I was surprised last night to hear news of Daniel Anderl’s tragic death on Sunday night in New Jersey. Daniel was a young man on the rise, enrolled in classes starting in the next few weeks, ”university president John Garvey wrote on Twitter. “He turned 20 last week.”

The young Anderl, who previously attended St. Joseph High School in Metuchen, New Jersey, was remembered as “a true friend, a proud hawk and a wonderful human being in general,” according to a statement on the school’s website. .

“It is with great sadness that we inform you that last night Dan Anderl ’18 was taken from us,” the statement said. “We will really miss him. We pray for Dan’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. Please know that we are in mourning with you.”

North Brunswick Mayor Francis “Mac” Womack told NJ.com that Mark Anderl needed surgery shortly after the attack, but is now stable at an area hospital.

Attorney General William P. Barr acknowledged the tragedy and offered his condolences in a statement Monday.

“I offer my deepest condolences to Judge Salas and his family for the death of her son and I wish her husband a speedy and complete recovery,” she said. “This type of illegal and evil action against a member of the federal judiciary will not be tolerated, and I have ordered all the resources of the FBI and the US Marshals Service to investigate the matter.”
