10:19 a.m .: Major League Baseball has formally announced that this morning’s game has been re-posted as part of a doubleheader.
10:06 o’clock: The Reds’ schedule has been in a state of limbo following Saturday’s positive Covid-19 test (s), but they appear to be trending after a return to play. MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports that tonight’s game against the Royals will also be postponed – as was the case with the last two games of this weekend’s series against the Pirates – but both sides will play a double header tomorrow (Twitter links). The Reds’ recent wave came back negative, and they are currently on their way to Kansas City. However, the league will take the extra step to push them back one more day.
It’s a point of frustration for some fans, but MLB has apparently become more cautious with its scheme in the throat widespread outbursts on the Marlins and Cardinals rosters. Both of those clubs saw new positions emerge well after the initial cases were identified. Miami had new days six days after its initial positions, and the Cardinals had new positions more than a week after their initial cases were announced. Other members of the organization tested positive along the way in those outbreaks, and that has not been the case with the Reds. But the league understandably hopes to prevent a third outbreak worth more than a week of games.
Today’s play in a doubleheader will not delay the schedule of both clubs, assuming the organization tests negative tomorrow. As for the makeup games against the Pirates, there is no set date yet, although the two teams have a few series left on the schedule that give a lot of chance for makeup games. Harren Sept. The 4-6 series in Pittsburgh is currently scheduled for accounting through a few off-days, and the Sept. 14-16 series in Cincinnati is followed by a Sept. 17 off.
