Larry Michael retires after 16 seasons broadcasting Washington games

In addition to a nickname change, another long soccer tradition in Washington is coming to an end.

Veteran play-by-play radio player Larry Michael announced Wednesday that he is retiring after 16 seasons as “Voice of the Washington Redskins.”

“After 16 great years, my time with the organization is over,” said Michael. “As a lifelong Washingtonian, I was blessed to work with so many great people. I want to thank everyone who contributed over the years. I am especially grateful to Dan Snyder for giving me the opportunity. We move on to the next chapter.”

In addition to his radio duties, Michael also hosted the team’s television show, “Redskins Nation,” and also held positions in the club as senior vice president and content director.

Michael moved from the presenter of the pre-game and post-game shows in Washington to take over as the play-by-play radio presenter in 2004, joining Hall of Famer Sonny Jurgensen and Sam Huff. Nothing is known about Michael’s replacement in the transmission cabin.

The team has said it hopes to announce a new nickname, to replace the Redskins’ name and logo that it has worn for 87 years, sometime before training camp begins later this month.
