LAPDA declares illegal assembly in downtown LA due to ‘uncontrolled crowds’

Downtown Los Angeles (KABC) – Los Angeles police on Tuesday night declared an illegal assembly near the Staples Center in downtown LA due to a “large and rampant crowd” in the area.

A large police presence responded to the scene as several people dressed in full black gathered near the arena. The group was walking from Figueroa Street around 8pm, but it’s not clear where it was unclear.

The LAPD tweeted, “Due to the large and uncontrollable crowd, the LAPD has declared an illegal assembly and issued a dispersal order in the area of the northwest corner of Pico and Figueroa.” “At this time, anyone in the area has to be given immediate leave and all orders of any police officer have to be obeyed. The area is now closed.”

The LAPD said some individuals wearing helmets or keypads were stopped by officers and taken into custody for questioning. It was not immediately clear whether any arrests had been made.

The LAPD issued a citywide strategic alert on Tuesday afternoon, although the agency said the decision was “to ensure adequate resources to deal with any incidents that may arise as a result of election day activities, but it is not the result of any specific incident.”
