Alexander, who is retiring from the U.S. Senate after three terms, is a minority of Republicans on the hill who embraced the idea that Biden actually won the election. Trump refused to admit, telling Fox News in an interview aired Sunday morning: “It’s not over. We keep going and we’ll keep moving forward.”
In discussing threats against election officials in various states, Alexander pointed out to history that the ability to transfer power peacefully is one of the main characteristics of democracy.
“I think the most important thing for our country, as George W. Washington said when Washington was founded, is not the first election, but the second election, a systematic transfer of power. That’s not good for our democracy, “he said. “I don’t think anything that works is good for our democracy. And people can make their own decisions about whether the president is doing the right thing.”
Alexander also denied the allegations in a statement issued Friday stating “Similar, baseless allegations concerning Alexander’s candidacy have been made more than once.
“I don’t think their lawyers have the right to go to court with a specific lawsuit without any evidence.”
