Lake County man dies of COVID-19 when virus hits The Villages and Summerfield


A Lake County man has succumbed to COVID-19 as the virus continues to rampage through The Villages, the surrounding communities, the Lake County Jail and Coleman Federal Prison.

The latest victim was identified as a 67-year-old man who had not recently traveled and tested positive on April 3. It became the 21st COVID-19-related fatality in Lake County and the 48th in the three-county area.

Another villager living in Sumter County has contracted the virus, bringing the total number of cases in the mega-retirement community to 92. Eighty of them are in Sumter County, with 10 in Lake County and two in part of the Marion County community. The Florida Department of Health had reported 11 cases Monday in the Lake County part of the sprawling retirement mecca, but that number dropped on Tuesday.

Summerfield also reports four new cases for a total of 46. Newer patients have been identified as:

  • 74-year-old woman with no recent travel history;
  • 64-year-old male who had recently traveled to Mexico;
  • 70-year-old woman with no recent travel history; and
  • 66-year-old man with no recent travel history.

COVID-19 has also continued to be a problem at the Lake County Jail, where 119 cases have been reported between 102 inmates and 17 staff members. Coleman Federal Prison also reported an increase of two cases, bringing the total to seven among six staff members and one inmate.

Overall, the three-county area is reporting 1,509 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 48 Monday through Tuesday. They are made up of 807 men, 679 women and 23 non-residents. A total of 203 people have also been hospitalized with the disease.

Lake County continues to mark the three-county area with 795 cases, an increase of 32, among 420 men, 359 women and 16 nonresidents. A total of 102 people have also required some type of hospital care.

Clermont continues to lead Lake County with 162 cases, an increase from 41 in 24 hours. Others have been identified in Tavares (162), Leesburg (102), Eustis (85), Mount Dora (46), Groveland (32), Lady Lake (24), Sorrento (19), Minneola (16), Umatilla (15 ), Mascotte (15), Montverde (9), Fruitland Park (8), Howey-in-the-Hills (5), Altoona (3), Okahumpka (3), Astor (3), Yalaha (2), Paisley (2), Grand Island (2) and Astatula (2).
Sumter County added four new cases for a total of 290 among 201 men, 87 women and two nonresidents. There have been 17 deaths and 46 people have been hospitalized.
Sumter County’s newest patients have been identified as:

  • A 43-year-old male who had not recently traveled or had contact with another patient;
  • 13-year-old male who had traveled to Georgia and other parts of Florida;
  • 38-year-old man; and
  • 21 year old male.

The majority of Sumter County cases – 123 – have been reported at Bushnell. Of those 120 have been identified at the Sumter Correctional Institution. Other cases have been reported in Lake Panasoffkee (22), Oxford (20), Webster (12), Wildwood (11), the Lady Lake County portion (7), Coleman (6), Sumterville (5) and Center Hill ( two)

Marion County is now reporting 424 cases, an increase of 12 in a 24-hour period. They are made up of 186 men, 233 women and five non-residents. There have been 10 deaths and 55 people have been seen in area hospitals.

In addition to the new Summerfield patients, Marion County’s newest cases include:

  • 39-year-old woman from Ocala;
  • A 44-year-old male from Ocala with no travel history who had been in contact with another patient;
  • A 27-year-old male from Ocala with no travel history who had been in contact with another patient;
  • 59-year-old woman from Ocala who had been in contact with another patient;
  • 21-year-old Belleview woman with no recent travel history who had been in contact with another patient;
  • A 36-year-old man from Ocala with no recent travel history who had been in contact with another patient; and
  • 24-year-old male from Ocala.

Ocala continues to lead Marion County with 273 cases. Others have been identified at Belleview (25), Dunnellon (20), Citra (12), Ocklawaha (7), Silver Springs (7), Anthony (4), Reddick (3), Weirsdale (2) and Fort McCoy (1 ))

In total, Florida reports 103,503 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 3,286 in a 24-hour period. Of these, 101,303 are residents. There have been 3,238 deaths and 13,325 people have been hospitalized throughout the Sunshine State. Those numbers show 65 more deaths since Monday and 206 additional people are being treated in hospitals.
