LA County’s daily coronavirus case counts at the highest level of summer

Los Angeles County public health officials on Saturday reported 20 new deaths from coronavirus and 3,780 newly confirmed cases, the most positive cases in a single day since the summer period.

County officials attributed the increase in cases to increased testing in the county – more than 56,000 tests were processed on Friday – yet the positivity rate remains high, about %%. One-day is the largest figure among new positive cases since mid-July, which is not associated with a backlog of cases, health officials said.

In addition, 966 people are currently hospitalized in Covid-19 with more than a quarter in the ICU. This is the highest number of hospitalizations in nearly two months, officials said.

With nearly three-quarters of cases reported on Saturday being under the age of 50, younger ones are leading to growth in new coronavirus cases.

Barbara Ferrer, the county’s director of public health, said: “Many young people are socializing with non-household members of the household and are concerned that asymptomatic young people are helping to spread the virus at a time when cases in the county are increasing dangerously. ” One line. “While the effects of coronavirus on young people may not be significantly associated with death, young people certainly act as a transmission connector for at-risk individuals.”

While younger people make the most new coronavirus cases, death is concentrated in the elderly. Nine of the 20 deaths since Saturday were over the age of 80, and two were between the ages of 30 and 45, the lowest in the age range. Three-quarters of the new deaths reported on Saturday had underlying health conditions.

To date, county health officials have identified 336,549 positive cases of coronavirus and 7,266 deaths in the county.
