L.A. School district, teachers’ union reaches temporary agreement to reopen schools in April

A temporary agreement between the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Los Angeles Teachers Union arrived on Tuesday evening to reopen schools starting in mid-April, according to several reports.

The agreement would include daily individualized education for elementary school students, but still rely heavily on online instruction for older students, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Middle and high school students taught in class two days a week but other days from home. According to the Times, students taught distance from different teachers while staying in the same room all day and sitting in the same classroom rather than moving between periods. Families will also be allowed to keep their children at home in distance education.

“As we have both stated for some time, the correct way to reopen schools must include the highest standards of COVID safety in schools, the continued reduction of viruses in the communities we serve and access to vaccinations for school staff,” said United Teachers Los Angeles President Sicily. Myrt Cruz and LAUSD Superintendent Austin Butner said in a joint statement. “This agreement achieves a shared set of goals. It is our shared commitment to the highest safety standards and the spirit of trust and cooperation that we will take back to schools with us.”

Elementary school students participated half a day each day, allowing for smaller class sizes.

The April settlement was reached because it would allow teachers and other school staff to be vaccinated and reach maximum immunity from shots before returning to school, which could take up to six weeks, according to the Times.

Under the schedule suggested by the school district, grade-schoolers follow the first and older students who return on April 19 in early May. The official date with the union has not been settled.

Under the agreement, the county is required to move from a more serious “purple level” to a “red tire,” which is expected within days of the number of cases going down.

Schools have been closed since March 13 last year.
