Apple is ready to significantly slim its packaging for its next iPhone line. The analyst previously said that Apple will no longer include wired headphones with the iPhone 12, and today reports that it also expects the power adapter to now be sold separately as well.
Kuo says Apple wants to continue selling iPhone 12 at a price similar to iPhone 11 and that removing the accessories in the box will offset the cost of 5G network components. Presumably, this will greatly reduce the size of the iPhone packaging, which will help reduce Apple’s freight costs and be better for the environment.
It is unclear if the Lightning cable is still included. Compared to other Apple products, the Apple Watch Series 3 includes the magnetic charging cable but does not come with the wall socket / power adapter.
Kuo says the 20W power adapter shown above is legitimate but will not come with the iPhone 12. Instead, it will be sold separately as an optional purchase. The analyst believes Apple is discontinuing the current 5W and 18W chargers in favor of the new 20W model.
For Apple’s next iPad lineup, consisting of a new 10.8-inch iPad later this year and an 8.5-inch iPad mini in the first half of 2021, Kuo believes Apple will continue to package the power adapter.
Many iPhone users already have a large number of chargers and headphones, so removing them may not be a problem in practice. However, it will surely lead to complaints from the community that Apple is raising prices for all accessories. The removal of the boxed headphones is believed to help boost sales of Apple’s AirPods range.
The iPhone 12 product range is expected to comprise four models; an iPhone with a new smaller 5.4-inch screen, two 6.1-inch models and a new 6.7-inch ‘Max’ size. All four iPhones in the iPhone 12 lineup will feature OLED displays for the first time.
