Kim Kardashian West has spoken about her husband Kanye West’s bipolar disorder amid erratic behavior in recent days stemming from her 2020 presidential bid.
The 43-year-old rapper appeared Sunday at a campaign rally in North Charleston, South Carolina, when he criticized Harriet Tubman and spoke tearfully about abortion. He followed that up with a lengthy Twitter protest Monday night, in which he spoke of his marriage to Kardashian, his fears of being “locked up” and taunted an upcoming album named after his late mother.
Kardashian, who has never spoken publicly about her husband’s bipolar disorder, issued a lengthy statement on Instagram defending West.

“As many of you know, Kanye has bipolar disorder. Anyone who has this or has a loved one in their life who knows, knows how incredibly complicated and painful it is to understand,” begins Kardashian’s statement shared on Instagram.
She noted that she has avoided speaking publicly on this issue out of respect for her children, as well as for her husband’s right to privacy.
“But today, I feel like I should comment on it because of the stigma and misconceptions about mental health,” he explained. “Those who understand mental illness or even compulsive behavior know that the family is powerless unless the member is a minor. People who are not aware of or are far removed from this experience may judge and not understand that the person herself must be involved in the process of getting help no matter how hard her family and friends try.
Kim said she realizes that her husband’s words may carry particular weight and “cause strong opinions and emotions” due to his status as a public figure. However, she said she finds him as a “brilliant and complicated” person who is sometimes simply struggling to deal with his mental illness.
“He is a brilliant but complicated person who, in addition to the pressure of being an artist and a black man, who experienced the painful loss of his mother, and has to deal with the pressure and isolation that increases his bipolar disorder,” she wrote. “Those around Kanye know his heart and understand his words sometimes they don’t align with his intentions.”

The reality star’s statement comes hours after he reportedly released and subsequently deleted a tweet in which he claimed he wanted to divorce her. However, she made it clear that she supports him regardless of the fight.
“Living with bipolar disorder does not diminish or invalidate your dreams and creative ideas, no matter how big or impossible they may feel for some,” he wrote. “That is part of her genius and, as we have all witnessed, many of her great dreams have come true.”
She went on to apparently confirm that West’s recent behavior, including his presidential campaign and tweets, is part of a problem related to his mental health. She asked for privacy and “compassion and empathy” from others.

“We as a society talk about giving grace to the issue of mental health as a whole, however, we should also give it to the people who live with it when they need it most,” he concluded.
