Kierra Sheard and Karen Clark-Sheard close the BET 2020 Awards with emotional ‘Something has to break’

For the final presentation of the BET 2020 Awards on Sunday (June 28), gospel star Kierra Sheard She took the stage with her mother Karen Clark-Sheard (of The Clark Sisters) to drive the audience away with a moment of hope.

The duo performed Kierra’s song “Something Has to Break”, a passionate hymn from their latest self-titled album, where the singer pleads with God for a sense of relief or solution during difficult times. “Knock down every lie / correct the wrong,” he sang. “Because when you have your way / Something has to be broken.”

Both Karen and Kierra appeared on a brightly lit stage, dressed in sparkling black dresses, with a backing choir similarly dressed in black, punctuating each of their words. The powerful performance even included an impromptu coda, with the mother-daughter duo singing powerfully back and forth, before Kierra closed the performance with a final plea: “Speak up and say you’re breaking up.”

The evangelical number ended a night of massive performances at the BET Awards, including those by stars like Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Megan Thee Stallion and many more.
