Kevin Conroy reflects on his appearance in crisis on Infinite Earth
For a generation of fans, Kevin Conroy is Batman’s definitive voice. After staring in Batman: The Animated Series and several subsequent animated shows and video games, Conroy got his first chance to portray Bruce Wayne in live action during The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earth crossover. However, fan expectations were shattered when Conroy’s scenes were limited to one episode of Batwoman. In addition, Conroy’s older Bruce was far more vicious than any of his earlier incarnations of Batman.
Via Heroic Hollywood, Conroy acknowledged the backwardness to his Crisis roll up during a performance Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum. However, Conroy was pleased with the experience.
“The fans were not happy about that,” Conroy said. ‘They did not like to see that version of Bruce Wayne. But for me it was fun, it was a lot of fun to stroke my acting kettles a bit. They did not tell me anything about the Batman. They just said that in the future he would be the Batman, an old Bruce Wayne. I said, ‘You mean like in Batman Beyond old Bruce Wayne? “They said, ‘No, he’s not 80. But he’s older and he’s in bad shape.’ They are so guarded with their scripts, the studios, they do not publish them. That they did not give me anything. I got the script basically when I got on the plane to fly to Vancouver to do the show, I had seen nothing. I said yes because I was so excited to do something on camera again [after] 25 years. ”
“I was sitting in this armor suit that was an external back because his back was broken by Superman.” Conroy added. ‘And I did not know this was going to happen. That it was full of surprises. I did not know I would try to kill Supergirl. He was dark. He was dark. The producer was great, the cast, Ruby Rose, everyone was fantastic, wonderful to work with. But they act like a movie a week. It is a massive enterprise. ”
