FRANKFORT, Ky. (LEX 18) – Gov. Andy Beshear announced in a press release Saturday that there are 814 new COVID-19 cases and eight new coronavirus deaths in the state of Kentucky.
Seventeen of the newly reported cases were of children 5 years and younger. School has been restored in some areas of the Commonwealth over the past several days. Among children aged 6-18, 93 tested positive or were identified as “likely” for positive testing for COVID-19.
“One hundred and ten children aged 18 and over on today’s report – we are seeing too much going on,” the governor said. “And in many of the places that are least affected for children, they see schools as open to schools this Monday.”
“An unfortunate consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic has been people preventing acute and chronic disease, not related to the virus,” said Dr. Steven Stack, commissioner of the Department of Public Health.
“Do not ignore the concern for your health,” said Dr Stack. For example, if you have chest pain or signs of stroke, do not let the fear of building up the virus stop you from seeking care. And, since this is a month of awareness for immunization, please make plans to get your flu now. We must do everything possible to prevent what is referred to as ‘Twindemic’, a flu season that is projected to be very active at the same time as we continue to fight the coronavirus. “
As of Saturday, at least 819,265 tests had been administered. The COVID-19 test positive rate, based on a seven-day rolling average, with respect to total positive tests reported by laboratories divided by total tests reported by labs, stood at 4.84%. The number of Kentuckians recovered stood at 9,502.
