“It started in 1983,” said Matheson. “Ed and I did a small jam group with some friends, not for an audience, just to play with characters and comedy. So the suggestion was two teenagers studying history who know nothing about history. We just started playing with these guys and we liked them instantly. We found them really fun instantly. We just started playing them. “
Their only public performance of Bill and Ted
Solomon and Matheson created the characters in a private group. They only performed them publicly once.
“They are such a fun character to inhabit that we were doing it for fun,” said Solomon. “We did it once in front of an audience at UCLA. We asked questions like Bill and Ted and basically everything was excellent or false as far as I remember. They were so much fun to play that we had fun for a year. ”

Letting Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter take over
For the moment Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure filmed in 1988, Solomon and Matheson had played the characters for years. It was bittersweet to let them go.
“It was difficult for us to imagine who would take the characters,” said Solomon. “We were not involved in the casting process [but] We were in Arizona, where the movie was about to be shot. We were in line at a McDonald’s and we were actually complaining to each other, ‘I bet whoever gets picked will never be able to do it the way we expected.’ ”
