White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany rejected a journalist’s question about whether President Trump is happy that the South has lost the Civil War.
During a press conference on Monday, Ryan Lizza, Washington’s chief correspondent for Political, He presented his questions by mentioning the national discussion on statues and flags commemorating the Confederacy.
“I think a lot of people are trying to understand what their vision is to commemorate the Confederacy and the proper place for the Confederate flag,” he said. “Does President Trump think it was good for the South to lose the Civil War?”
“Well, your first question is absolutely absurd. You are proud of the United States of America,” McEnany replied, quickly speaking of statues across the country that have been knocked down or smashed.
Lizza also asked if the president had plans to ban the Confederate flag at his protests.
“That would be a question for your campaign,” said McEnany.
Talks about race and Confederate symbols have permeated national dialogue in the past few weeks after the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in police custody late last month. Confederate statues have been removed across the United States, and NASCAR decided to ban the display of Confederate flags at its events.
