Where do you think Kanye West got his skills from? Kanye West released a surprise song in honor of his late mother, Donda West, on what would have been her 71st birthday, on July 12. West tweeted the song on Sunday, along with a music video consisting of multiple clips. “Donda” actually begins with a snippet from her quote from KRS-One’s “Sound of da Police.” West arrives at approximately 1:30. “There can never be justice on stolen land,” recites the powerful lines. “Are you really in favor of peace and equality? Or when my car is hitched, do you know you want to follow me? Your laws are minimal because you won’t even think about the real criminal. This has to stop because we are becoming exaggerated with the sound of the police. ” Donda West was an English teacher for 31 years. She died in November 2007 from surgical complications.
West’s incorporation into the song is slim enough and more like his campaign manifesto than a tribute to his mother. “The devil is using you / confusing you / Our job is to understand who is who / Just outrage / In this nation / We will start a revolution in this basement,” he says. West’s wife, Kim Kardashian-West, also celebrated her mother’s birthday by posting a full video of Kanye and Donda rapping “Hey Mama” together. You can see a clip in the “Donda” music video, but KKW connected it to the original, below.
