Fort Lauderdale police found a lone kangaroo leaping through the city center on Thursday morning. Officers put a strap over his head and lifted the Australian expat out of the back of a police cruiser, footage from CNN affiliate WSVN showed.
The kangaroo was taken to the department’s stables, police said, and then tweeted a video of the animal reflecting on a wooden stall with grass to eat and a ball to play.
CNN contacted the police department to ask about the animal’s owner and how it had escaped and is waiting for a response. Meanwhile, the department shares live updates on the kangaroo on its Twitter profile.
The jump marsupial will remain with police until it can be transferred to a licensed facility, a spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) told CNN. The FWC will investigate the incident.
Fort Lauderdale does not allow residents to keep exotic animals such as kangaroos within the city limits. But under Florida’s exotic animal property laws, kangaroos can be classified as Class III exotic animals, a non-native species of wildlife that the FWC requires owners to obtain a permit to maintain.
