Kai Havertz incoming? Chelsea to step up transfer talks after the relegation from the Champions League, confirms Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard says the outcome of Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Bayern Munich “showed a lot” as he prepares for the club’s transfer plans this summer.

The Blues lost 4-1 in the second leg of their last-16 tie at the Allianz Arena on Saturday night to fall 7-1 on aggregate.

Lampard is now set for talks with director Marina Granovskaia and the Chelsea board about their recruitment plans and where they need to step up for next season.

The West London outfit has already been signed by Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech prior to the transfer window, and Lampard wants to sign Kai Havertz, as well as defensive reinforcements and a new goalkeeper.

“Recruitment is a big part of this game,” Lampard told BT Sport.

“When you look through the team, nights like last night in footballing sense show me a lot.

“Now that the season is over, it’s an interview now and time to see what areas we can improve.

“It’s our job to go out and see if we can improve.

“I feel like I know where we can go. Now is the time to look into it.”

Lampard added: “We are working on a job. It’s not the norm for Chelsea in the last 15 or 20 years.

“We do not have players like a prime Eden Hazard, a prime Diego Costa, Petr Cech, John Terry, Didier Drogba.

“These teams competed year after year for Premier League titles, and came regularly to semi-finals and finals. We have a lot of young players who have developed a lot.

“People do not normally praise Chelsea for the next quarter. It has not always been the levels.

“We are not happy with fourth, we want more, but the feeling is that we have achieved something with the group we have.

“But now is the important time to not rest, not settle with the fourth and think about where we can improve with the players and as a club.”
