June 2020 NPD: The Last of Us Part 2 is best seller of the month and one of the best PlayStation releases

Every month the NPD Group publishes information about the best-selling games, consoles, and accessories on all video game platforms in the United States. While it does not represent total sales worldwide, it does provide a good insight into one of the largest video game markets. Mat Piscatella, a fantastic NPD analyst, has shared the June 2020 results.

We already knew that The Last of Us Part 2 had sold over 4 million copies in its first three days, so it should come as no surprise to learn that it was the best-selling game of June 2020. This not only makes this instantly is the third best-selling game of the year so far, but The Last of Us Part 2 had the second-largest release of any game released by Sony … Only Marvel’s Spider-Man had a month-long release. On the hardware front, the Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console of the month.

As always, remember that NPD is based on dollar sales, not units sold.

Here are the results for June 2020:

• Total sales: $ 1.2 billion, 26% more year-over-year.
• PC and video game software: $ 540 million, an increase of 49% year-over-year.
• Video game hardware: $ 191 million, 17% less year-over-year
• Video game accessories and game cards: $ 417 million, an increase of 29% year-over-year.
