The first wireless update to hit the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 + in the One UI 2.1 era of the lineup is the security update dated the first of this month. With the latest vulnerability fixes from Google and Samsung, the surprising version already started hitting Exynos variants of devices last week. Packages are identified by firmware versions G960FXXUAETG3 and G965FXXUAETG3.
Some minor bug fixes, performance charms, or both are likely included in this release, based on Samsung’s semantic practices that seem to suggest a more diverse OTA download than one that only contains a single security level update.
Galaxy S9 series enters final phase of life cycle
Samsung’s software updates are always rolled out gradually, especially for general-owned devices like its annual flagship Galaxy S-series. The wait shouldn’t be too long overall, depending on your exact model and location, but things don’t seem to be moving that fast and we’re still waiting for confirmation of this particular July 2020 security patch that expands beyond Germany.
Save to try to start a manual installation from Software update section of the Configurations application, you can always display official system images to a compatible device as an alternative. Those will appear in SamMobile’s firmware file, each listed in the respective model it points to.
Regarding the Galaxy S9 line, in general, it is currently in its thirtieth month after launch. The aforementioned jump to One UI 2.1 based on Android 10 should be the latest major OS update for 2018 flagships. By this time of next year, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 + are likely to move from the Samsung’s fastest development track for monthly releases to a quarterly review. Samsung also started reducing firmware development on its direct predecessors two months ago.
