Dame Vivienne Westwood has led a protest to stop Julian Assange’s extradition, while suspended in a large bird cage.

Dressed in a Canary yellow outfit, the fashion designer sang “Julian Assange Free” on Tuesday from a 10ft (3m) cage in front of the Old Bailey in London on Tuesday.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will appear at a full extradition hearing on September 7.

Mrs. Vivienne said she wanted to get Julian Assange “out of the cage”.

If extradited to the US, Assange will face 17 charges under the Espionage and Computer Intrusion Conspiracy Act after thousands of classified documents were released in 2010 and 2011.

The 49-year-old man is being held in Belmarsh High Security Prison in south-east London.

Dame Westwood said the trick was based on the expression “canary in the coal mine”

The protest of about 20 protesters was organized by Dame Vivienne’s son Joe Corre, who co-founded the Provocative Agent.

Dame Vivienne, 79, said she had dressed in yellow because miners used canaries to detect poisonous gas.

She said: “If the canary died, they all went out. Julian Assange is in a cage and needs to go out. Do not extradite to America.”
