The Trump campaign’s legal effort to stop Pennsylvania from collecting post-in-ballots at statewide dropboxes was put on hold Sunday by a federal judge who appointed the president himself.

U.S. District Judge J. Nicholas Ranjan said he would “apply the brakes on this lawsuit” to have Pennsylvania courts decide whether voters can put their ballots in dropboxes in violation of Commonwealth laws, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The decision comes after the president’s reelection campaign in 2020 presented no evidence that Pennsylvania’s use of the dropboxes could trigger voter fraud. The Trump campaign claims that the dropboxes are not explicitly authorized by the state legislature, according to Reuters.

As of June, roughly 1.9 million Pennsylvania residents had applied for a mail-in vote, up from 107,000 in 2016, the Enquirer reported. Just over 70% of those votes were cast by registered Democrats.

Trump won Pennsylvania in 2016 with less than 45,000 votes.

A recent Emerson College poll showed former vice president Joe Biden with a significant lead in Pennsylvania, drawing 52% of voters’ support compared to 43% for Trump. The poll also found that, of the 37% of voters who plan to vote by mail, 87% intend to vote for Biden.
