Josh Allen, Devin Singletary and the defensive line made headlines in Thursday’s scrimmage

Depth helps the defensive line room

Defensive end Jerry Hughes walked away from Thursday’s scrimmage, feeling the defense took a step forward. Whether it was sacks, tips or TFLs – the defensive line brought it all. What was even better was not just the same defensive lines, several different players had remarkable games.

“I think today was a great task of us using all of our tools, everything we’ve been working on since spring back with those Zoom calls to our meetings, our practices in training camp,” Hughes explained. “I think today was a great stepping stone in us to move forward to be that cold front that was that top defending unit, especially the defensive line unit that we want to be this year. That we are going right into the right now. good direction, and today was a great step up. “

From my count, the defensive line on the day had four sacks from three different players. There are currently 14 defensive lines on the roster, and Hughes thinks they all add value to the defensive line room.

“I think it’s the fact that every man comes in every day and is ready to compete,” Hughes said. “And the fact that we work so well among our group. We want everyone to go out well, contribute to the team, create TFLs, keep up with tips, get sacks so we can go out there and be the top defending unit we know. that we can be.

“So if you have guys who are young, guys who understand that, and they answer that bell, they step up when the lights go bright. That’s enormous, especially if those guys can hear some kind of coach, “Listen to some of our veteran players. Take those words and go out and play fast on the field. We know we’ll set up the right pieces in the game to go out there on September 13th and play fast.”
