A fire that started Monday morning prompted the evacuation of a rural area off Highway 49 near Nevada City.
The first order for evacuation was announced at 8 a.m., when the fire was on 40 acres. The Nevada-Yuba-Placer unit of the California Department of State Forest Management and Fire Protection estimates that it had the potential for 400 to 500 acres.
The fire started on the South Yuba River, 5 miles northwest of Nevada City. It burns in steep terrain with heavy vegetation, says CalFire.
The mandatory evacuation area from noon on Monday is shown in orange on the map above.
It includes the following roads:

- Hoot Owl Road
- Arctic Owl Road
- Willo Wisp Hof
- Fenton Way

Newtown Road and Jones Bar Road are closed.
Two adjacent areas are under warning of possible evacuations.
