Jonathan Price: A Texas officer has been fired for shooting

Wolfe City official Shawn Lucas was “dismissed for violating city and police department policies,” a Wolfe City official said.

Lucas was charged with murder in connection with Price’s death earlier this week. Preliminary investigations determined his actions were unreasonable, officials said.

The probable cause affidavit, released by the Hunt County District Clerk, said officers were responding to a report of a possible fight disrupting and progressing Saturday at a convenience store in Wolfe City.

Price, a 311-year-old black man, was involved in a domestic dispute and had never been violent before Lucas was shot, according to Price’s family attorney. Said Lee Merritt.

Attorney Robert Rogers, representing Lucas, said Price did not “claim to be an invalid, innocent party” before Lucas tried to detain him.

The Texas Rangers booked Lucas to Hunt County Jail on Monday. It is not clear where Lucas is being held or if he has been shut down. It is not listed on the Hunt County Jail Online Prison Roster.

Lucas’ bond is valued at 1 1 million, prison records show.

The officer thought Price was drunk, the affidavit says

The officer arrived at the store and was greeted by Price, who came very close to Lucas and asked, “Are you doing well?” Several times according to the affidavit. Price tried to shake the officer’s hand.

According to the affidavit, Jonathan Price was shot four times in the torso

Lucas thought Price was intoxicated. The affidavit states that when Price told him, “I cannot detain,” he tried to detain him.

The affidavit states, “Officer Lucas continued to try to restrain Price by holding Price’s hand and using verbal commands, both of which failed,” the affidavit said.

Lucas told Price that if he is not complied with, he is given the attitude and according to the affidavit, Price starts fleeing.

Lucas deployed a taser, but the affidavit states that the device is not fully effective and “continued to walk towards Officer Lucas” at a bored price.

According to the affidavit, “the officer appeared to have reached the end of Lucas’ teaser and caught him” and Lucas shot him four times in the upper torso.

Price died at a hospital, the Texas Department of Public Safety said in a statement.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office Fees Preliminary Ops Topsy Report provides the cause of death: gunshot wounds. A full report, with toxicology results, is expected in six to eight weeks.
