In a recent interview, Johnny Damon discovered his baseball soul, providing interesting descriptions of the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox.
Johnny Damon fondly remembers his days with the Boston Red Sox, but he has a truly special place in his heart for the New York Yankees. It’s the kind of place where a divorcee keeps lingering emotions for his barely hidden ex-wife.
Damon made the exact analogy of the relationship in an interview on the “Break a Bat” podcast, as reported by the New York PostJustin Tasch:
“I tell people that Boston is like an ex-girlfriend where you wish them well and you loved being a part of it, but you know what, you keep going, your life is great, you marry your trophy wife and you have six more children . . That’s what New York was to me. “
The 46-year-old played for the Red Sox from 2002 to 2005, slashing .295 / .362 / .441. His two appearances in the MLB All-Star Game came while he was in Beantown.
In the 2005 offseason, Damon signed a four-year, $ 52 million contract with the Yankees. He put a .285 / .363 / .458 line in stripes.
After helping the Bombers win the World Series title in 2009, the team decided not to re-sign it.
According to Damon, that choice is an important reason the Yankees have put together a rare decade without a championship. He also mentioned fellow outfielder Hideki Matsui leaving the Bronx as equally damaging:
“I knew why they couldn’t do it. I wasn’t there, ”Damon said, for Tasch. “Matsui was not there. At least one of us should have been there. You just had a different feeling for them. “
Damon clarified, saying that he and Matsui, both left-handed swingers, achieved alignment stability that their successors were unmatched.
That assessment may be correct. Of course, it could just as well be the bitter denunciations of an abandoned lover.
