John Prine posthumously named Illinois’ first honorary poet laureate


John Prine has received a very special posthumous honor. The country’s popular legend has been named the first honorary poet laureate of Illinois, his home state.

“John Prine leaves an incomparable musical legacy and was loved by the family and millions of fans who hope that in Heaven he will find Paradise waiting as he longed for it,” said Governor JB Pritzker in a statement.

Prine is the first from Illinois to receive the honorary designation, which commemorates his and celebrates his writings and musical contributions.

“John had great respect for writers of all kinds. I considered poets as one of those whose work had weight, relevance and a high profession, ”says Fiona Whelan Prine, the famous widow of the singer and songwriter. “It is a great honor for me, our children, and the entire Prine family to recognize that our beloved John will be named the Illinois State Honorary Poet Laureate. Thank you, Governor Pritzker, for this wonderful recognition. ”

The unprecedented accolade closely follows the release of Prine’s latest single, “I Remember Everything,” which opened at number 1 on the Rock Digital Song Sales count dated June 27, for its first leader on a list of Billboard.

Prine died on April 7, due to complications with the coronavirus. She was 73 years old.

His life and career were celebrated with the two-hour special on June 11.
