John Oliver ‘honored’ in Connecticut: Mayor names sewage plant after him

Comedian John Oliver has long used his “Last Week Tonight” platform to mock government agencies and public officials. Now the tables are turned.

Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton, Conn., Says the city has decided to name a local sewage plant after the British-born cabaret artist, after Oliver mocked Danbury on his August 16 show.

Boughton said in a Facebook post Saturday that a sewage plant seems the perfect fit for an Oliver tribute.

“Why? Because it’s full of (bleep) like you,” says the mayor in the post, which includes a mock-up of a green road sign that says “John Oliver Memorial Sewer Plant.”

On the show, Oliver rattled off a series of jokes about Danbury as part of a segment on racial disputes over juries in some Connecticut cities, reports The New York Post.

“If you’ll forget a city in Connecticut, why not forget Danbury, because – and this is true – f — Danbury,” Oliver said.

The host then mentioned some Danbury landmarks, such as the “Charming Railway Museum” and the “historic Hearthstone Castle” – before saying “Danbury Connecticut can eat my whole thing” – reports the Post.

“I know exactly three things about Danbury,” Oliver continued. “USA Today ranked it as the second best city to live in in 2015, it was once the center of the American hat industry. And if you’re out there, you have a standing invitation to come from John Oliver – children included – f — you. ”

In his video, Boughton gets into one definitive singer with Oliver, after moving on to a 2017 segment in which Oliver previously mocked the city for making a video in hopes of attracting Amazon jobs there, the Post reports.

“And, oh,” said the mayor, “we got Amazon here in Danbury.”
